Introduction
It was running in Cuba the end of ten years in the eighties, a stage which could be called the golden decade, because it refers to a period of relative solvency, within the economic crisis that continued in the Island, from 1959 until those days. However, that expression, when looked at from that context, suggests a supposed golden period, which is actually far from the true meaning....
....This situation which coincided with some last moment legislation which, although small, when classified inside of what signifies the word liberty, represented a small gap of living with dignity inside of a jail surrounded by waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean sea....
....Mainstream media, controlled by the Estate, always formed part in the systematic manipulation of information and of all topics, based in the distortion of the events published, in order to disguise, or deviate the attention in other directions with all that could be a proof of inefficiency by the directive or decisions from the Cuban leadership, at any level.
This was a estate mechanism on track to achieve what the regime considered in the moment the formation of “new man”, and all those who did not sympathize with these arguments, was considered “gusano” (worm), which is a derogatory denomination for those who dissented, even in a timid way, which was transmitted from the elite ranking class of the “monarchy” self titled as communism, or socialism, and in occasions just revolution, according to what was convenient in the speech....
....And what could have never been imagined. Coming to Havana in fresh airs from Eastern Europe and, directly, from the support of the so called socialist countries, one word which surprised the world: Perestroika.
But this time, not as the threat of destruction that created the crisis of the missiles in Cuba during the sixties, instead it was in the form of reforms to improve a jail system that needed a change, without going to war or shed blood.
In this context, in 1989 occurred the encounter between the president of Supreme Soviet of the already extinguished Soviet Union (USSR), Mijail Gorbachov, and the Cuban President, Fidel Castro, which would mark a before and after in the history of the planet.
And while all of this was going on, they started to publish my photographs in one of the newspapers of the capital, where I was for a little over four years, until the time I asked for my resignation. During this time I was at the side of people from who I learned a lot and admire to this day, but also with some others, with whom I was able to hear how everything functioned behind the curtains....
....To what the regime called “special period” I tried to represent in the order of their new guidelines, with the Series “Records from an enchanted history”; “In times of Weddings”; “Stories Long-Short” and “Cubita Coffee” or (Kids are born to be happy), which complemented a narrative of my visual experiences in images and reflections, which in these moments I present in the form of a book: “Cuba, chronicles of the 90s”.
Introducción
Corría en Cuba el final del decenio de los años ochenta, una etapa que podría ser llamada como la década de oro, porque remite a un período de relativa solvencia, dentro de la crisis económica continuada en la Isla, desde 1959 hasta esos días. No obstante, esa expresión que, vista en este contexto, sugiere un supuesto período dorado, queda bien lejos de su real significado....
....Una situación que coincidía con algunas legislaciones de último momento que, aunque pequeñas, al ser clasificadas dentro de lo que significa la palabra libertad, representaban mínimos resquicios de vida digna dentro de una gran cárcel rodeada por las aguas del océano Atlántico y del mar Caribe....
...Los medios de comunicación, controlados por el Estado, siempre formaron parte de la manipulación sistemática de la información y de todos los temas, basándose en la tergiversación de los hechos publicados, para disfrazar, o desviar la atención en otras direcciones con todo lo que pudiera ser una prueba de la ineficiencia de las directrices o decisiones de la dirigencia de la dictadura, a cualquier nivel.
Un mecanismo estatal encaminado a lograr lo que el régimen consideraba en su momento la formación del “hombre nuevo”, y todo aquel que no simpatizaba con estos argumentos, era considerado “gusano”, una denominación despectiva hacia quienes disentían, aunque fuera tímidamente, que era transmitida desde la cúpula más alta de esa “monarquía” auto titulada como comunismo, o socialismo, y en ocasiones sólo revolución, según la conveniencia del discurso....
....Y lo que nunca se pudo imaginar. Llegaba a la Habana en aires frescos desde la Europa del Este y, directamente, desde el sostén de los llamados países socialistas, una palabra que sorprendía al mundo: Perestroika.
Pero esta vez, no como la amenaza de destrucción que creó la crisis de los misiles en la Cuba de los años sesenta, sino en forma de reformas para mejorar un sistema carcelario que necesitaba un cambio, sin hacer guerra o derramamiento de sangre.
En ese contexto, en 1989 ocurrió el encuentro entre el Presidente del Soviet Supremo de la extinta Unión Soviética (URSS), Mijaíl Gorbachov, y el Presidente cubano, Fidel Castro, que marcaría un antes y un después en la historia del planeta.
Y mientras sucedía todo esto, comenzaban a publicar mis fotografías en uno de los diarios de la capital, donde estuve poco más de cuatro años, hasta el momento en que pedí mi renuncia. Durante ese tiempo estuve al lado de personas de las que aprendí mucho y admiro hasta el día de hoy, pero también con otras, con las que pude ver y escuchar el funcionamiento detrás del telón....
....A lo que el régimen llamó “período especial” yo intenté representarlo en el orden de sus nuevas directrices, con las Series “Apuntes de una historia encantada”; “En tiempos de Nupcias”; “Cuentos Largos-Cortos” y “Café Cubita” o (Los niños nacen para ser felices), complementando una narrativa de mis experiencias visuales en imágenes y reflexiones, que en estos momentos los presento en forma de libro: “Cuba, crónicas de los 90”.
